OVERVIEW / HISTORY
Established in the late 1800's by John O'Donnell, his son, Columbus O'Donnell, William Patterson and Peter Cooper, Canton was once a cornerstone of Baltimore's industrial waterfront. Canton was primarily settled by Welsh, Irish, German and Polish immigrants. John O'Donnell was the first merchant to bring goods from China to Baltimore. Canton evolved from a rural undeveloped area to a major industrial area with the emergence of the Canton Company, a real estate development firm best known for building "Copper Row" where the factory workers lived. Canton is the location of the Navy Yard that produced the USS Constellation in 1794-1797, and is also the birthplace of the B&O Railroad's first steam engine, Tom Thumb.

Canton has emerged as one of Baltimore's most popular neighborhoods as many young professionals have relocated to the area and rehabbed much of the area's housing inventory. As the area has grown in popularity the price of housing in the area has also climbed.
